Ensuring vehicle safety has always been and will continue to be critical. A sudden tire puncture can disrupt schedules and pose significant risks. Recent incidents, such as the tragic accident in Delhi’s Dwarka where a tempo overturned due to a tire burst, resulting in three fatalities and multiple injuries, explain the importance of timely and effective tire repairs. Kwik Tubeless Tire Patches provide a reliable solution for unforeseen challenges, ensuring vehicles remain roadworthy and safe. We specialize in delivering high-quality tubeless repair solutions for various tire injuries.
These patch application guidelines outline a step-by-step process for applying a tubeless tyre puncture patch to ensure a seamless repair.
Understanding Kwik Tubeless Tire Patches
Let’s take a look at what tire patches are and their benefits.
What Are Kwik Tubeless Tire Patches?
Kwik Tubeless Tire Patches are specialized repair solutions designed for tubeless tires. They utilize dual-cure technology, combining chemical and heat activation, to ensure a robust and lasting bond. This dual approach enhances the patch’s adhesion, making it suitable for a wide range of vehicles, from motorcycles to heavy-duty trucks.
Key Benefits of Using Kwik Tubeless Tire Patches
- Enhanced Durability: The dual-cure mechanism ensures that the patch withstands high pressures and temperatures, extending the tire’s lifespan.
- Quick Application: Designed for ease of use, these patches allow for swift repairs, minimizing downtime.
- Versatility: Suitable for a range of vehicles, they cater to both personal and commercial transportation needs.
- Cost-Effective: By extending tire life and reducing the need for replacements, they offer significant long-term savings.
Preparing for the Tire Repair Process
Before you begin, proper preparation is key to a successful repair.
Identifying the Damage:
- Conduct a thorough internal and external inspection of the tire.
- The purpose of this inspection is to determine the size of the injury and if the tire can be repaired.
- Use proper lighting for inspection.
- Check for run-flat or weathering cracks; it is not recommended to repair tires with these issues.
- Ensure the repairable injury is only on the tread area.
- Avoid inverting and excessive spreading of the beads in radial tires during inspection.
- If the angle of injury is more than 25∘, then only a ‘2 Piece Repair’ should be done.
Gathering the Necessary Tools and Materials:
- Kwik Klean or any tire pre-buff cleaner or rubber solvents
- Tire scrapper
- Low Speed Drill (Max 1200 RPM)
- Appropriate size carbide cutter
- Relevant template
- Marker
- White Corundum Grinding Wheel or a Cup Rasp of 36 Grit
- Nylon brush or vacuum cleaner (do not use compressed air)
- Fast Dry Cement or CVF
- Spiral Cementing Tool
- Pliers
- Serrated hand Stitcher
- Repair Sealer
- Protective gloves
- The right size patch
Ensuring a Safe Work Environment:
- Wear protective gloves to safeguard against chemicals and sharp objects.
- Park the vehicle on a flat, stable surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Use wheel chocks to prevent movement while lifting the vehicle.
Step-by-Step Application of Kwik Tubeless Tire Patches
Follow these steps carefully for an effective tire repair.
1. Removing Foreign Material and Determining Injury Size/Angle:
- Remove foreign material from the injury using a probe.
- Use an inspection tool to determine the size and angle of the injury. The size and angle are crucial for selecting the appropriate repair.
2. Cleaning the Tire:
- Use Kwik Klean or a tire pre-buff cleaner/rubber solvent to clean the tire.
- While the area is still moist, use a tire scraper to remove all traces of dirt and silicone tire mold lubricant from the inner-liner area.
- Repeat this 2 or 3 times to remove all traces of mold lubricant thoroughly. If traces remain, the repair may fail.
3. Preparing the Injury:
- Use a low-speed Speed Drill (Max 1200 RPM) and an appropriate size carbide cutter to prepare the injury.
- Drill the injury both from inside and outside, repeating 3 to 4 times to clear it thoroughly.
4. Marking the Repair Area:
- Using a relevant template or the PWPP patch as a reference, outline the area with a marker.
- The marked area should be ¼” or 6 mm wider all around than the PWPP patch size.
5. Buffing the Inner Liner:
- Buff the inner liner with a white Corundum Grinding Wheel or a Cup Rasp of 36 Grit.
- Ensure all bladder impressions are completely buffed off.
- The buffed texture should be of RMA1 / BT1 (smooth, velvet-like texture appropriate for inside tire surface repairs).
- Be careful not to buff too deep and expose the tire cords.
6. Cleaning the Buffed Area:
- After rasping, clean the buffed area thoroughly with a nylon brush or vacuum to remove dust completely.
- Do not use compressed air to clean the buffing dust, as this may contaminate the rasped area. Preferably, use a vacuum cleaner.
7. Applying Cement:
- Uniformly apply a thin coat of Fast Dry Cement or CVF in the injury channel using a Spiral Cementing Tool.
- Apply a single coat of Fast Dry Cement or CVF in a stippling motion and allow it to dry.
- Normal drying time is around 3 to 5 minutes, or as per ambient temperature and humidity. Do not use compressed air or a hair dryer to dry the cement.
- While drying, keep the injury at the 12 o’clock position to avoid contamination.
8. Preparing the Patch:
- Remove the poly film from the base of the patch, without touching the cushioned surface, and replace the film on the cushioned surface to facilitate easy handling while application.
- Insert the metal end of the PWPP into the injury channel.
- Firmly push the end of the PWPP into the injury channel. The poly film can be removed once the PWPP is in position.
9. Inserting the PWPP Patch:
- Grab the guide wire firmly from the outside using pliers and pull it until the rubber stem is out.
- Do not hold the metal guide wire with the pliers while pulling it.
- Ensure only the rubber stem of the PWPP is gripped with the pliers while pulling the Patch.
- When the patch is applied, ensure the bead of the tire is in the normal position (not spread).
10. Pulling the Rubber Stem:
Once the rubber plug is visible outside, grab the rubber stem and pull it uniformly till you get a slight dimple on the dome of the patch.
11. Stitching (Rolling) and Curing the Patch:
- Stitch the patch from the center to either side vigorously using a serrated hand Stitcher.
- This ensures that no air is trapped between the patch and the Tire.
- Repeat this in the opposite direction.
12. Trimming the Excess Stem:
Cut off the excess stem on the outside of the tire (Leaving around 3mm above the tire surface).
13. Applying Repair Sealer:
Apply a coat of Repair Sealer around the patch and the entire exposed buffed area. This will improve the integrity of the inner liner of the tire.
Reinstalling and Reinflating the Tire:
- Reinstall the tire onto the wheel rim.
- Inflate it to the manufacturer’s recommended pressure.
- Check for any air leaks to confirm the repair’s success.
Post-Repair Checks and Maintenance Tips
- Regular Inspections: Periodically check the repaired area for signs of wear or leaks.
- Maintain Proper Tire Pressure: Ensure tires are inflated to the recommended levels to prevent undue stress.
- Avoid Overloading: Exceeding the vehicle’s load capacity can strain tires, leading to potential failures.
- Seek Professional Advice: If unsure about the repair’s integrity, consult a tire specialist.
